📢 Let's talk about mental health and CBD.

What is mental health?

Mental health is the general well-being of the way you think, regulate your feelings and behave. Sometimes people experience a significant disturbance in this mental functioning. There may be a mental disorder when patterns or changes in thinking, feelings, or behavior cause distress or impair a person's ability to function. A mental health disorder can affect your ability to:

• Function in social settings.

• Learn at a level according to your age and intelligence.

• Maintain personal or family relationships.

• Participate in other important activities.

• Performing at work or school.

Cultural norms and social expectations also play a role in defining mental health disorders. There is no standard measure across cultures for determining whether behavior is normal or when it becomes disruptive. What may be normal in one society may be cause for concern in another.

How are mental health disorders defined?

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a guide published by the American Psychiatric Association that explains the signs and symptoms of several hundred mental health conditions. These include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia.

The DSM provides criteria for making a diagnosis based on the nature, duration, and impact of signs and symptoms. It also describes the typical course of the disorder, risk factors, and common coexisting conditions.

How do mental health professionals diagnose disorders?

A psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, or other mental health professional can make a diagnosis of a mental health condition. Your primary care physician may also participate in a diagnostic evaluation or refer you to a mental health specialist.

Given this information on mental health, can CBD be used as a treatment for a mental disorder?

Let's start with the CBD. What is it? CBD is short for Cannabidiol. It is one of the main active compounds in marijuana or cannabis. Cannadidol is also found in hemp. The hemp plant is similar to marijuana but does not contain THC. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical most responsible for the psychological effects (high) of marijuana. CBD is one of the hundreds of components in marijuana. CBD is believed to bind to the CBD1 and CBD2 receptors in our nervous system. It is not fully understood how CBD affects these receptors, but it is believed that it may interact with serotonin signaling.

In an interview with Dr. Juan Manuel Orjuela neuropsychiatrist and Director of Mental Health at Khiron Life Sciences Corp. he responds on this issue and gives us very good information about it.

What are the benefits of the use of cannabinoids in the treatment of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.?

The use of cannabinoids, mainly cannabidiol (CBD), has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. In fact, the anxiolytic effect of CBD has been used with excellent results in people with social phobia and anxiety associated with diseases such as Parkinson's and chronic pain. In this way, people who feel less anxious, reduce levels of depression and optimize the quality of sleep.

Can it also be used as part of treatment in patients with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolarity, etc.?

The use of medicinal cannabis, and in particular, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive component of the plant, is contraindicated in these conditions, as it could worsen symptoms. However, some studies show that CBD could be beneficial in people with refractory schizophrenia, that is, those patients who have tried various medications and have been ineffective. It is a promising field, but more studies are needed to recommend it.

Are the benefits that you mentioned to us only palliative, that is, do they only alleviate the symptoms or do they also point to the cure of the patient?

Medical cannabis reduces symptoms and helps improve the quality of life of the person receiving treatment. It is not a curative treatment. This product is used as an adjunctive treatment but is not a substitute for first-line medications.

In this way we understand that our mental health is very important for the development and balance in our life, ensuring good mental health is key to our life and to function effectively in our work environment, in our interpersonal relationships, in our performance and daily life.
